Twelve rooms above the paddy fields.

A small guest house on Ella Road, half an hour below the hill country and an hour from the edge of Yala. Breakfast on the balcony, dinner when you get back, and somebody who knows which road is washed out this week.

From 15 December to 15 March — the dry season here — high-season rates apply, and 31 December is priced separately.

The inn

A restaurant, a bar, and a hall that has seen a lot of weddings.

Breakfast is included on most rates and served from six, because the safari jeeps leave early. Lunch and dinner are cooked to order rather than kept warm — tell us in the morning and it will be ready when you are.

Restaurant

Rice and curry, and a short list of things that are not rice and curry. Vegetarian by default if you ask.

Bar

Cold beer, arrack, and a fridge that is only sometimes reliable at 3pm.

Banquet hall

For weddings, almsgivings and the occasional office party. Ask about taking the whole guest house.

Around Wellawaya

Between the hills and the plain.

Wellawaya sits where the road down from Ella flattens out. Most guests use it as the night between the hill country and the south coast, and then stay a second one.

Yala and Lunugamvehera

About an hour and a half to the Yala gate. We book the jeep and the driver knows to be back before the restaurant closes.

Ella and Little Adam's Peak

Half an hour up the road, and the Nine Arch Bridge twenty minutes past that. Go early — the road narrows and the buses do not.

Diyaluma Falls

The second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, twenty minutes west. The upper pools are a climb and worth it in dry weather.

Buduruwagala

Seven rock-cut figures from the tenth century, ten minutes away and almost always empty.

Staying

The practical part.

Book direct and you deal with us rather than a call centre in another country. We hold a room for twenty-four hours while you decide.
